# Board effectiveness and the chair of the future: Five fundamental forces that define the modern chair's role

Deloitte (Jun 11, 2025) "Board effectiveness and the chair of the future: Five fundamental forces that define the modern chair's role" draws on Deloitte Global Boardroom Program research across 16 countries and regions, capturing insights from more than 300 board chairs of large listed, private and family-business companies. Four of the five forces are explicit: organisational governance demanding more chair input as a guiding hand respecting board role; societal expectations of business expanding into community and challenge engagement as part of social licence to operate; crisis leadership becoming the norm with greater speed and public scrutiny; and board operations calling for digital enhancement and hybrid agility. For SEA mid-market boards re-evaluating chair scope, the five-force frame is the strongest available structuring tool.
