# How to Protect Directors from Board Burnout

Boston Consulting Group (Mar 17, 2025) "How to Protect Directors from Board Burnout" by Christine Barton, who leads BCG's CEO Advisory practice, warns that directors are working longer hours heading into 2025, spending nearly 90 hours per year in board meetings alone, compared with a pre-pandemic average of 70 to 80 hours. Three remedies: strategic meeting management (more time without company management present, which directors are craving), explicit decision frameworks that reduce unnecessary deliberation, and a supportive atmosphere in which directors check in on each other and surface overload early. Directly applicable to SEA mid-market boards stacking ad-hoc strategy sessions onto a fixed annual cadence.
