2024 ASEAN Board Trends: Refocus on Board Effectiveness (launch executive summary)

Presented on 22 February 2024 by Michele Kythe Lim, President and CEO of ICDM, on 335 responses from nine countries and thirteen industries with fieldwork in Q4 2023, split 195 board members and 140 management; conducted with eight ASEAN director institute partners including SID, VIOD, IoD Thailand, ICD Philippines, MIoD and IICD. On the statement that the board actively engages in healthy discussion with no one director dominating, 57 per cent agreed overall but the split was 65 per cent of board members against 46 per cent of management, a 19 percentage point gap; 53 per cent agreed the board "lacks diverse views which hampers insightful discussions"; and 11 per cent agreed directors rarely express their views and disagreements, 8 per cent of board members against 16 per cent of management. ICDM's own 22 February 2024 press statement that "over half" said board members rarely express conflicting views conflated two items and was corrected by ICDM on 12 June 2024; the 11, 8 and 16 per cent figures are the correct ones.
